Pretty Woman A/S

A performance that deal with and makes use of the powerfull psychologies of buying an other person or selling your self for money.

Every night a new prostitute is on stage in the role of Julia Roberts/ Vivian Ward in this remake of the American blockbuster, Pretty Woman. By recreating the most important scenes from the film this performance questions the myth of the happy hooker, and asks what is at stake when you purchase another human being?

9 women from the local drug prostitution scene perform in the play. In the performance, they where given stage directions and lines through an in-ear loud-speaker.

The resulting performance was a very fragile and intense togetherness between audience, actors and the prostitutes inside the containers. As it happened in the film, you very quickly forgot that Vivian was a prostitute, instead hoping for the romance to happen.

We like to see theatre as a form of friendship. In this case, very strange, but intense and warm relations was created between actors, audience and prostitutes. Outside the containers the performance raised a great deal of debate on the subject prostitution, inside the containers it gave the audience the possibility to meet the persons behind the debate without ever letting them speak other lines than the strict dialog of the Pretty Woman movie.

The project is supported by the Danish Arts Council.

Pretty Woman A/S was performed in November 2008 in a container at Halmtorvet in Copenhagen.

Who gets undressed – the audience or the prostitute, must remain unspoken. Either way, it is original.

★★★★★
PRETTY WOMAN A/S is “hand-held” theater with low key acting and a piece of disregarded reality.”
